NAVEL ORANGES

How do you tell a Navel from any other orange? They are the ones with the “button formation” opposite the stem end. Navel oranges are available from November through June, with peak supplies in January through March. Their deliciously sweet flavor and seedless interior make them a natural choice for eating right out of your hand. They peel and segment easily.

Usage Ideas

  • Navel segments are a great snack for kids and lunches. They withstand travel abuse. Simply peel and gently separate each segment and bag it so it is ready to eat on the run!
  • Navels are excellent for juice. Offering you a nutritional way to get your nutrients the freshest way. Do not store Navel juice.
  • Add Navel orange segments for a burst of sweetness to your favorite snack. Try them with lowfat yogurt or toss them in your favorite cereal or salad.

VALENCIA ORANGES

Sometimes known as the “summer orange”, Valencias are actually available from May through October, with peak supplies in June through August. Usually thin-skinned, they are small to medium in size, contain few seeds and have a fantastic flavor.

Did you know that Valencia oranges can occasionally change their color? When you select a Valencia it is deliciously sweet and completely ripe but on occasion they will “regreen” in very warm weather. How? Well as it ripens on the tree, it turns a bright orange color, which is normal. But when the warmer temperatures kick in, this may make the chlorophyll to reform in the rind as it hangs on the tree, causing a ripe orange to look partly green. Don’t let that fool you, Valencias are super juicy and perfect for squeezing orange juice. You can get lots of juice from just one!

Usage Ideas

  • Valencias are perfect to eat in cut segments with the peel intact. Cut fruit in half crosswise; then cut 3 or 4 wedges from each half. Kids love tucking them in their mouth and creating an “orange smile”!
  • In a hurry? Try squeezing the juice then refrigerating overnight. Cover tightly and chill immediately and you will retain the wonderful flavor and loads of Vitamin C. Enjoy with a healthy breakfast!
  • Easy to peel and add or garnish a Summer fruit salad

MINNEOLA TANGERINES

Easily identified by the knob-like formation at the stem end. Minneloas offer a deliciously sweet-tart flavor. Growing large in size, its exterior is smooth to slightly pebbled in texture with a deep red-orange exterior color. They peel very easily and may have few seeds. Minneolas are available from January through April.
